How to Analyze & Profile a Business Case Study in 5 Minutes

Step-by-step tutorial on uploading case documents, extracting core issues, and setting up the business case workspace using CaseEdge.

Case study analysis is the bedrock of management consulting interviews and business school case competitions. Traditionally, this meant spending hours highlighting printed papers, organizing notes in separate notebooks, and trying to manually map out industry benchmarks.

With CaseEdge, you can compress this entire setup and profiling phase into a five-minute structured workflow. By leveraging AI-guided active reading, hotkey-enabled highlight tagging, and real-time comprehension audits, CaseEdge prepares a professional case profile that feeds directly into your issue trees and slide presentations.

In this tutorial, we will take you step-by-step through starting a new workspace, uploading your materials, tagging core clues, running an AI comprehension audit, and establishing a baseline case hypothesis.

Our client is a premium EV scooter manufacturer facing a 12% drop in EBITDA margins. The primary objective is to achieve profit recovery within 18 months. However, they are restricted by a $50M capital expenditure ceiling.

Step 1: Initialize Your Workspace

Before analyzing a new case, you must prepare a clean workspace environment. CaseEdge uses a centralized state machine to ensure your data flows logically from intake to slide outlines.

  1. Open the CaseEdge application.
  2. If you have an active case session running, click the Reset button in the top navigation bar. This clears the cache and resets the elapsed session timer (set to a default of 30 minutes to simulate real-world case interview constraints).
  3. Confirm that your token count (visible in the top bar as ⚡) is loaded. CaseEdge runs on a credit token system, giving you free starting tokens to perform advanced audits and AI generation tasks.

Step 2: Upload Your Case Materials

CaseEdge offers multiple ways to ingest case materials, whether you are analyzing a scanned PDF packet or practicing with pre-configured classic consulting problems.

Paste Text or Upload PDFs

In the Intake Section, you will find the IntakeUploader component.

  • Direct File Upload: Drag and drop your case files directly into the upload area. CaseEdge natively supports text files (.txt) and PDF documents (.pdf). If your PDF contains selectable text, CaseEdge extracts it locally. If it is a scanned image or complex layout, CaseEdge automatically routes the data to a secure vision model to extract and sanitize the text.
  • Manual Paste: If your case prompt is in a web portal or email, paste the raw text directly into the text editor box.

Practice with Classic Cases

If you do not have a case file on hand and want to test the tool, click on the Classic Cases dropdown menu. You can select pre-loaded scenarios modeled after McKinsey, BCG, and Bain case interviews, such as:

  • Coca-Cola Profit Drop: A classic profitability framework case.
  • Market Entry for EV Manufacturer: A growth strategy and market expansion case.

Once selected or uploaded, the full text will populate the Highlighter Panel.

Step 3: Engage in Active Reading with Highlight Tagging

Passive reading is the enemy of structured case solving. CaseEdge enforces active reading by allowing you to highlight sentences and categorize them. This acts as a semantic filter, structuring raw prose into actionable parameters.

Drag-select any text block in the case brief to trigger the floating classification tooltip. You can assign the highlighted text to one of four key consulting categories:

  1. 🎯 Objective [Hotkey: O]: The ultimate goal of the client (e.g., “increase profit margins by 15% in two years”).
  2. ⚠️ Constraint [Hotkey: C]: Operational, legal, or financial limitations (e.g., “cannot lay off full-time staff” or “maximum upfront capital of $50M”).
  3. 👥 Stakeholder [Hotkey: S]: Key individuals, parent companies, or regulators who influence decisions (e.g., “Board of Directors,” “labor unions”).
  4. 📊 Metric [Hotkey: M]: Core financial or operational indicators (e.g., “LTV/CAC ratio,” “EBITDA,” “churn rate”).

[!TIP] Keep your hands on the keyboard! When you select text, press the corresponding letter key (O, C, S, or M) to tag the text instantly. Press Escape to dismiss a selection.

Tagged items appear as color-coded highlighted text in your main text editor and are saved as a clean list at the bottom of the Highlighter Panel.

Step 4: Run the AI Comprehension Audit

Before proceeding to issue tree construction, you must verify that you have grasped the fundamental dynamics of the case study. CaseEdge features a Socratic coach that audits your tagged clues.

  1. Locate the Intake Coach Panel on the right side of the screen.
  2. Click Run Intake Audit. (This action does not cost tokens, making it a risk-free way to test your comprehension).
  3. The AI Socratic coach will evaluate your tagged list of objectives, constraints, stakeholders, and metrics against the full case text.
  4. You will receive a Comprehension Score (0-100) and a breakdown of feedback:
    • Stellar Highlights: Where your tags aligned perfectly with critical case drivers.
    • Missed Signals: Key clues or hidden constraints in the text that you overlooked.
    • Misclassifications: Clarifying if a metric was incorrectly tagged as a constraint, or vice versa.

[!NOTE] If your comprehension audit score is 80 or higher, CaseEdge rewards you with +5 tokens. Scores below 80 yield +2 tokens. You can use these earned tokens to unlock premium AI generation features later in the workflow.

Step 5: Generate the “Case at a Glance” Profile

Once you pass the active reading stage, you are ready to generate a structured case profile.

  1. Click the Analyze Case button. If you haven’t run the highlight audit, bypassing it to get a direct analysis will cost 10 tokens. If you have completed the audit, this step is unlocked.
  2. CaseEdge’s underlying LLM analyzes the case text and populates the Case at a Glance view with:
    • Core Problem Statement: A refined, one-sentence synthesis of the root challenge.
    • Industry Parameters: Sector, business model type, and target market dynamics.
    • Key Constraints & Stakeholders: Summarized in easily readable, editable bullet points.
  3. Formulate a Hypothesis: Under the Case Glance view, you can write your own working hypothesis or click Generate Hypothesis (Costs 5 ⚡) to receive an AI-suggested hypothesis backed by strategic reasoning. Click Adopt Idea to save the hypothesis as your baseline.

Once complete, the Case Brief Sidebar (accessible via the book icon in the top right bar) becomes active. This drawer slides out from any tab in the application, allowing you to review your objectives, stakeholders, constraints, and full case text while you build issue trees or outline slides.

Click Continue to Issue Tree at the bottom of the screen to transition your structured core problem to the next stage of the framework.
