Drafting Executive Case Recommendations in CaseEdge

How to use the CaseEdge Drafter to write structured SCR recommendations and export slide outlines.

At the end of a consulting project or case competition, your final recommendation is what matters most. Senior executives and case judges do not have time to wade through pages of raw research. They want a clear, structured recommendation backed by robust, quantified evidence.

The gold standard for structuring executive recommendations is the Pyramid Principle, combined with the SCR (Situation-Complication-Resolution) storytelling framework.

  • Situation: The current, undisputed state of the client’s business.
  • Complication: The trigger, bottleneck, or problem that disrupts the situation.
  • Resolution: The core recommendation that solves the complication, supported by three distinct pillars.

In this tutorial, we will show you how to navigate the Drafter workspace in CaseEdge, leverage AI hints to spark strategic ideas, use the structured pyramid builder, expand your draft into a clean SCR format, calibrate your tone for specific audiences, and export the final structure into a slide outline.

SCR DRAFTER WORKSPACE
STRUCTURE MODE: SCR
Situation (Baseline Context)EV Scooter market is expanding at 25% CAGR with our client leading premium general trade distribution.
Complication (Strategic Tension)EBITDA margins dropped by 12% due to rising cell import costs and logistics inefficiencies.
Resolution (Action Recommendation)Reallocate 85% of crew capacity, optimize localized cell assembly, and execute dynamic unit pricing.

Step 1: Access the Drafter Workbench

  1. From the main CaseEdge navigation panel, select the Drafter tab.
  2. If you have progressed through the previous stages and selected your analysis frameworks (e.g., SWOT, Porter’s Five Forces, MECE Tree), the workbench will load.
  3. If you have not selected frameworks, CaseEdge will display an empty state. Click the Go to Frameworks button to complete the structuring phase first.

Step 2: Generate AI Approach Hints

If you are facing writer’s block, CaseEdge provides strategic guidance based on your case brief:

  1. Click the Get AI Hints (Costs 5 ⚡) button.
  2. CaseEdge’s Gemini-powered assistant will analyze your workspace parameters and present three distinct strategic options (e.g., M&A Acquisition, Organic Market Entry, Operations Optimization).
  3. If you like one of the approaches, hover over the hint box and click Use this idea. This copies the recommendation outline directly into your editor, saving you from drafting the initial text from scratch.

Step 3: Scaffold Your Recommendation via the Pyramid Principle

CaseEdge’s Structured Pyramid Scaffolding is the recommended way to draft your case ideas. It forces you to write in a top-down, structured manner.

Fill in the four core input fields:

1. Action Recommendation (Lead)

This is the core action the client must take. Keep it active and precise (e.g., “Acquire regional competitor Airline X for $1.2B to capture 15% regional market share.”). CaseEdge provides template outlines for Acquisition and Market Entry strategies to help you write.

2. Pillar 1: Financial Backing

Provide the monetary evidence for your decision. Address the ROI, cost savings, or market size (e.g., “Synergies will yield $50M in run-rate savings by Year 3.”). Templates include Synergies and TAM/Payback formulas.

3. Pillar 2: Operational Backing

Outline the operational feasibility (e.g., “Reallocate 85% of underutilized crew capacity to optimize supply chain delivery.”). Templates include Capacity and Logistics optimization structures.

4. Key Risk & Mitigation

Proactively address the biggest bottleneck and explain how to mitigate it (e.g., “Risk: Union friction. Mitigation: Partner early on alignment and routing guarantees.”). Templates include Competition Risk and Execution Risk formats.

[!TIP] If you prefer to write in raw paragraphs without the structured fields, click Switch to Freeform Mode to write your recommendation in a single freeform text box.

Step 4: Format and Expand into SCR Structure

Once your scaffolding is populated, click Combine & Format as SCR (or Format as SCR in freeform mode).

CaseEdge processes your raw inputs and structures them into three distinct sections:

  • Situation: Validating the industry context.
  • Complication: Pinpointing the root operational bottleneck.
  • Resolution: Merging your recommendation and backing pillars into a cohesive narrative.

You can edit the generated Situation, Complication, and Resolution fields directly in the SCR Structure Editor to polish the wording.

Step 5: Calibrate for Your Target Audience

A recommendation designed for a Chief Financial Officer should not sound like one designed for a Board of Directors. CaseEdge features an Audience Calibrator to help you tailor your pitch:

  1. Locate the Audience Calibrator panel in the Drafter tab.
  2. Select your target audience from the dropdown:
    • CEO (Chief Executive Officer): Focuses on strategic vision, high-level growth, and competitive positioning.
    • CFO (Chief Financial Officer): Focuses on capital allocation, IRR, payback period, and budget constraints.
    • Board of Directors: Focuses on long-term shareholder value, risk mitigation, and corporate governance.
  3. Click Calibrate Tone. The AI Socratic coach rewrites and adjusts the phrasing of your SCR recommendation to match the executive priorities of your selected audience.

Step 6: Quantify Your Financial Projections

A presentation without numbers is just an opinion. Under the Financial Quantification panel, add the key financial metrics of your proposal:

  • Initial Investment ($): The upfront capital required.
  • Payback Period (Years): How long before the project breaks even.
  • Expected ROI (%): The project’s return rate.
  • Key Financial Risks: Add any capital risks and mitigations.

This data is dynamically bound to your final presentation slides and saved in your PDF export.

Step 7: Export to a Slide Outline

With your recommendation, SCR structure, and financial figures set, you are ready to prepare your presentation slides.

  1. Click Generate Slide Outline at the bottom of the page.
  2. CaseEdge transitions you to the Slide Outline tab, where it automatically generates a multi-slide presentation structure:
    • Slide 1: Title & Executive Summary.
    • Slide 2: Market & Situation Assessment.
    • Slide 3: Core Recommendation (Resolution).
    • Slide 4: Financial Pillar (with proposed data visualization suggestions).
    • Slide 5: Operational Feasibility.
    • Slide 6: Risks & Next Steps.
  3. Each slide is complete with suggested headers, key executive messages, bullet points, and charts to build your actual PowerPoint or Google Slides deck.
