An issue tree takes the core problem statement and divides it into smaller, manageable sub-issues. To be effective, this tree must follow the MECE principle: Mutually Exclusive, Collectively Exhaustive. This means the categories you create must not overlap (no double-counting), and when combined, they must cover 100% of the possible root causes or solution pathways.
In this tutorial, we will show you how to navigate to the Issue Tree workspace in CaseEdge, choose between manual playground mapping and AI-assisted tree generation, modify and expand your branches, and run a Socratic MECE audit to score your logic structure.

Step 1: Access the Issue Tree Workspace
To start building an issue tree, you must first complete the Case Intake phase. CaseEdge dynamically binds the root node of your issue tree to the Core Problem extracted during intake.
- In the CaseEdge sidebar or bottom mobile navigation, click the Issue Tree tab.
- If you have run the case intake, you will see a workspace populated with your extracted core problem as the root node.
- If you have not completed the intake, the screen will show an empty state warning you that a core problem breakdown is required. Click the Go to Intake button to upload your case materials first.
Step 2: Choose Your Path - Interactive Playground vs. AI Generated Tree
CaseEdge offers two modes to help you structure your thoughts depending on your learning goals:
The Interactive Playground (Hands-On Drafting)
The Interactive Playground is a node-based interface that allows you to build your issue tree manually from scratch. It is designed to train your brain to structure problems without relying on AI as a crutch.
- By default, the playground contains only the Root Node representing the core problem.
- You will construct the logic branches yourself, adding sub-issues and sibling nodes step-by-step.
The AI-Generated Tree (Premium Reference Baseline)
If you are stuck, or want to compare your logic with a consulting-grade benchmark, select the AI Generated Tree tab.
- Cost: Generating the AI Tree costs 10 tokens on your first run. However, if you build a tree in the playground and run a manual MECE audit first, this AI Tree can be unlocked for free.
- Clicking the Unlock AI Tree button triggers CaseEdge’s Gemini-powered structure model.
- The model analyzes the core problem and returns a fully branched, consulting-grade logic tree (typically 3-4 levels deep) adhering to industry-standard frameworks (e.g., Profitability formula, Market Entry feasibility, Value Chain analysis).
Step 3: Map and Modify Nodes in the Playground
Building a robust issue tree in the playground is simple and intuitive. Each node on the screen represents a sub-issue or causal driver.
Adding and Editing Nodes
- Modify Node Labels: Hover over any node and click on the text area to edit its name directly. Type a concise, action-oriented phrase (e.g., change “Revenue” to “Average Revenue Per User (ARPU)” or “Volume of Units Sold”).
- Add a Child Node: Click the Add Child (+) button on a node. This creates a new sub-branch underneath it, allowing you to go deeper into that specific issue (e.g., breaking “Volume of Units Sold” into “New Customer Acquisition” and “Existing Customer Retention”).
- Add a Sibling Node: Click the Add Sibling button to add an adjacent branch on the same hierarchical level. Sibling nodes must divide their parent node in a clean, logical manner.
- Delete a Node: Click the Delete (Trash) icon to remove a node and all of its nested children if you realize that branch of logic is irrelevant to the case constraints.
Step 4: Blend AI Structure with Your Workspace
If you want the best of both worlds—the structure of an AI-generated tree and the customization of a manual playground—you can easily merge them:
- Click on the AI Generated Tree tab.
- If you have unlocked the tree, click the Initialize from AI button.
- This action copies the entire AI-generated structure and injects it into your Interactive Playground.
- Switch back to the Interactive Playground tab. You can now manually delete branches, modify labels to match your specific case constraints, and add custom hypotheses.
Step 5: Run the Socratic MECE Audit
Once you have built your playground tree, you need to validate its logical consistency. CaseEdge features a built-in logical checker that reviews your tree for MECE alignment.
- In the top right corner of the Interactive Playground panel, click Run MECE Audit.
- CaseEdge will send your tree structure to the Socratic coach for evaluation.
- Within seconds, you will receive a MECE Score (0-100) and localized feedback:
- Overall Logic Assessment: The coach reviews whether your top-level branches (Level 1) segment the problem correctly.
- Node-by-Node Feedback: Red, amber, or green indicators will appear next to your nodes on the tree. Click on these indicators to view specific feedback (e.g., “The division of pricing channels here overlaps; consider separating online vs. offline channels to maintain mutual exclusivity”).
[!NOTE] Running the MECE audit can earn you tokens! If your custom playground tree scores 80 or higher, you earn +5 tokens. If you score below 80, you earn +2 tokens for your attempt.
Once your tree is audited and you are satisfied with your logic structure, click Select Frameworks at the bottom of the page to move to the framework alignment step.
